Island Park Fire
For those of you not from Winfield, KS you probably have no idea what Island Park is. Island Park is the park at the edge of Winfield. It is the turn around place for the teenagers that drag main, it's on the North edge of town and the Sonic is the turn around point at the sound end of town. It is actually an island surrounded by water, that has alot of ducks for the kids to feed, and you can fish, and have nice little picnic area, and lots of places for birthday partys and family reunions... during Christmas time it becomes the Isle of Lights complete with thousands of Christmas lights. This community playground that was built there in April of 2004, and this was funded by the community and everyone pitched in and built this beautiful playground, from contractors, to bankers, to farmers, to prisoners, to blue collar workers.....There were bricks and posts that could be purchased in honor of or in memory of, I bought a post for both of my boys and they were posted not too far from the front patio....You could also buy hand prints.....Here you can see the playground on fire by going to this link http://www.newscow.net/story.php?StoryID=2475 This really is a tragedy in a community that is so closely knit and that worked so hard to provide a beautiful playground. We had alot of great memories going to this playground on the weekends, to run off some extra energy. This playground was totally engulfed within minutes, thank goodness no kids were there at the time, but my oldest son was crying most of the night, it really upset him that it was destroyed. They do not know yet if the fire was started intentionally but that is what people are speculating. It has been determined that the playground is a total loss. Hopefully we will rally together again and rebuild it soon.
